Wasting Time on Celebrities

You know, it might just be me, but I sincerely believe that the way we as human beings spend our time is truly going down the crapper. We could be out making the world a better place, volunteering, caring for neglected animals, or reading to children, but are we? Hardly.

It sickens me that we as a society have become incredibly fascinated by celebrities. No longer are we content to appreciate an artist's works and leave it at that. No, we must find out every minute, asinine detail about the celebrities we admire. And for what purpose, I ask you? Is there some stellar reason behind our admiration? What possible reason is there, I ask you, to spend our time thinking about Kelly Clarkson's hair habits or who Hilary Duff is dating.

Why do we care? They are just people in a particularly profitable line of work, but we can't leave it at their music or acting. Nope, not us! We have to study everything they do, like our very life depends upon it. What purpose is there behind behaving in such a way?

It's one thing to "worship" U2's Bono because of his admirable efforts as a humanitarian, or to commend Moby for his political awareness and activism. However, there is a BIG difference between admiring a celebrity for the causes they support and looking up to someone simply because they are famous.

Seriously, we are wasting our lives, people! What if this is all there is? Wouldn't that just blow if we realized, upon death, that we could have done so much more if we hadn't dedicated so much of our time to things like this that don't even matter?

I mean - come on.
